Here is some Advice from Ms. Rosenthal!
~Wear clothes you can move in~
In theater we use our actors tools to create characters and play games, which often requires lots of movement! Wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving and stretching in. Now I’m not saying stay in your PJs all day, but it might not be the best class to wear a new dress, the shoes you don’t want to crease, or any stylin new swag you don’t want to get dirty.
~Have a full water bottle nearby~
On an average day we might spend spend less time outside, moving around, or being physically active. That means we can forget to hydrate! This is especially important for days that we are using our voices- which is almost every day in theatre. Dehydration can make it hard to project, to enunciate your words, and can make it more likely you hurt yourself during stage combat or other physical activities.
~Something to write with + on~
It may seem like a silly reminder for school, and you might not always need it, but it’s important to bring if you want to write something down to remember, take notes on class (which always keeps me focused and engaged as I learn) or for doing in class work. Sometimes I put information in the notes tab, but then it often disappears behind other open windows. I strongly encourage you to bring paper and pencil.
~ A “Yes, And” approach~
If you have never taken a theatre course, it’s a little different than many other classes. It requires a mix of movement and creativity, connection and independence. There will probably games, activities or questions that you have never experienced before. I encourage you to try! Many don’t have “right” answers and are open to your interpretation. And don’t be hesitant to ask any questions you may have.
